Structural Steel Erection & Fabrication Works

Structural steel fabrication can be carried out in shop or at the construction site. Fabrication of steel work carried out in shops is precise and of assured quality, whereas field fabrication is comparatively of inferior in quality. In India construction site fabrication is most common even in large projects due to inexpensive field labour, high cost of transportation, difficulty in the transportation of large members, higher excise duty on products from shop. Beneficial taxation for site work is a major financial incentive for site fabrication. The methods followed in site fabrication are similar but the level of sophistication of equipment at site and environmental control would be usually less. The skill of personnel at site also tends to be inferior and hence the quality of finished product tends to be relatively inferior. However, shop fabrication is efficient in terms of cost, time and quality.
Structural steel passes through various operations during the course of its fabrication. Generally, the sequence of activities in fabricating shops is as shown in Table1. The sequence and importance of shop operations will vary depending on the type of fabrication required. All these activities are explained briefly in the subsequent parts of the section.

CNL are a market leading industrial Pipework installation contractor. We have the managerial experience, tradesmen and in-house plant and craneage to install pipework in a range of different sizes, work environments and meterages ranging from ten to tens of thousands. Pipework progress is monitored electronically to plan and manage isometric progress from initial receipt of spool through the erection and testing to the final handover and client signoff. We operate on Nuclear, Oil & Gas and High Hazard top Tier COMAHH sites and have the safety culture, training and experience to operate in such hazardous environments.
CNL have the in-house craneage, appointed persons and time served riggers and erectors to ensure all lifts are managed and executed in accordance with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER). Our company owned fleet of all-terrain craneage allows us to react to clients requests in a timely manner without involving a third party. We are familiar with client safety culture and permit systems and can carry out Lifting Plans, Risk Assessments and Method statements and manage the whole works.

Piping Fabrication & Installation works

Base Construction Inc. is capable of installing threaded (THR), socket weld (SW), butt-weld (BW), soldered end (SE), flanged (FLG), slip on glued (SOG), mechanical joint (MJ), fusion both socket and butt, grooved, and hydraulic coupling connection piping. Base Construction Inc. has certified welders (API, ASME B31.1 & B31.3, and City of LA). Our highly qualified pipefitters and welders make the codes requirement applicable and possible.

Pipe Routing Design and Implementation
Base Construction Inc. creates both in field and office isometric (ISO) drawings prior to fabrication and installation of piping. The Bottom of Pipe (BOP) elevation and Face of Flange (FOF) dimensions are established prior to hanging the pipe. Expansion loop and valve access are identified prior to pipe installation. Instrumentation locations are summarized to ease client needs. Insulation and accessibility and thickness are in consideration.
Pipe Support Design and Installation
Base Construction Inc. will analyze the need of pipe support, pipe bridge, and pipe rack. Since the existing pipe support may not be strong enough, Base Construction Inc. will study and design the revised pipe support system.

Painting Works

Good surface preparation is critical for the paint system to function effectively. As the performance of the paint system depends largely on its adhesion with the substrate, and paint adheres best to surfaces that are clean and sound, it is essential to establish the required standard and level of surface preparation works. The receiving surfaces should be dry, and free from foreign and unstable matters such as dust, dirt, rust, spatter, salt, grease, oil, loose paint film and so forth before proceeding with the painting work.

Works by other trades that might affect the painting should be satisfactorily completed. The applicator should inform the designer of any change in the nature or condition of the receiving surfaces, which may necessitate modification of the specifications.

– Use fillers that contain a resin/binder system e.g. acrylic based putty or cement with additives
– Water sensitive types e.g. gypsum-based fillers are not recommended as they may dissolve in water
– Prime surface before patching if oil-based fillers are used
– Patch in two stages if cavities are deep
– If applied immediately beneath finishing coats, shrinkage and variations in gloss, sheen or colour may occur

The traditional approach of teaching trade science and trade calculation as separate and distinct subjects in technical college programmes is not relevant to the new programme as it will amount to a duplication of the teaching of mathematics and physical science subjects in the course. The basic concepts and principles in mathematics and physical science are the same as in the trade calculation and trade science. In the new scheme therefore, qualified persons in these fields will teach mathematics and physical science and the instructors will apply the principles and concepts in solving trade science and calculation problems in the trade theory classes. To this end, efforts have been made to ensure that mathematics and science modules required to be able to solve technical problems were taken as pre-requisite to the trade module.
Evaluation Of Programme/Module
For the programme to achieve its objectives, any course started at the beginning of a term must terminate at the end of the term. Instructors should therefore device methods of accurately assessing the trainees to enable them give the student’s final grades at the end of the term. A national examination will be taken by al students who have successfully completed their modules. The final award will be based on the aggregate of the scores attained in the course work and the national examination.

Welding works

Welding is the process of securely joining two materials together using the process of coalescence and often also a filler material. Welding releases heat and energy which in turn liquefies the materials at the intended joint. When the materials re-solidify a secure joint is formed. Typically the materials joined consist of metals or thermoplastics.
Welding allows advanced fabrication to be undertaken by securely affixing these materials and thus facilitating the creation of a more developed piece of equipment or structure which can then be used accordingly for its intended purpose. In order to accomplish this important role welding must be versatile enough to work with a wide variety of different metals and thermoplastics in a range of varied, often difficult conditions.
Because the conditions, demands, and materials to be joined vary widely, different types of welding processes have been developed. Each process serves a different need and has its own set of pros and cons and general applications. What follows is a description of several of the most common and important welding services.

Types of Welding Services

  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)
  • Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
